A rare pair of carved sandstone stella octangula geometric pier caps. Each carving represents the stella octangula, an eight-pointed star formed from two interpenetrating tetrahedra. This geometric form has long been associated with mathematics, architecture and classical design.

During the Renaissance, geometric solids such as the stella octangula were studied as symbols of proportion and harmony. Similar forms appear in the work of Leonardo da Vinci through his illustrations for Luca Pacioli's De Divina Proportione.

Originally made as architectural ornaments, pier caps or finials, they also make striking decorative pieces for a desk, bookshelf or cabinet of curiosities.

This is a reclaimed pair with signs of age and previous use. Please check the images carefully to assess the condition before purchasing.
