Large 3 Ton Granite Neolithic Carving Standing Stone Boulder

This large granite boulder was imported from Norway in the 1980’s to form part of the sea defenses on the Norfolk coast.  In 2003 some holidaymakers spotted some mysterious markings on the large rock and alerted Norfolk archaeologists who believed that the scratched runic symbols, dragon and intertwined serpents were over 2000 years old and historically very significant and rare. The artifact was carefully removed and placed into a council depot for safe keeping while investigations continued. The Chief Curator for North Norfolk Museums, Dr John Davies was quoted at the time saying that the work was "extremely unlikely" to be a fake, adding: "It looks genuine. It is not the sort of design someone would doodle."

However when the media reported on the "potentially very important discovery" a local man came forward claiming that the carvings were only 8 years old and not 2000 as some of the experts had believed. He told the council that he had created the designs while sat on the beach using a hammer and chisel over a period of days in 1995. He had forgotten about the creation after moving away from the area until he saw the reports in the media.

Following the claims the authorities had questions to answer regarding the use of council funds for the initial removal and storage. The large boulder remained forgotten in a council stores for many years. When redevelopment called for the depot to be demolished the boulder was salvaged by the contractor before coming into our possession allowing us to save this quirky piece of local history and offer this unusual item with a fascinating backstory for sale.
